A federal judge temporarily blocked on Friday President Donald Trump’s effort to limit the use of mail-in ballots ahead of the November mid-term elections, as ballots are going out in one state.
It is the same judge, Boston-based U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani, who blocked an earlier, related effort, ruling that the executive order Trump issued in March was likely unlawful and unconstitutional, according to NBC News.
The “court finds, on one side, that immediate implementation of the Final Rule issued less than seventy days before the November 2026 election threatens disenfranchisement of millions of United States citizens who seek to vote by mail,” while “on the other side, that the record includes no evidence relating to fraudulent mail voting to support the rushed implementation of the Final Rule,” Talwani wrote.
“The court finds that Defendants have not made a strong showing that they are likely to succeed on the merits, have shown no irreparable injury absent a stay, have not shown that a stay will not substantially injure the other parties interested in the proceeding, and have not shown that a stay would be in the public interest,” the judge added.
In reaction to the verdict, New York Attorney General Letitia James said, “We won another court order blocking the president’s unlawful attack on mail-in voting. [USPS’] last-minute changes would cause chaos and make it harder for eligible voters to cast their ballots. I will keep fighting to ensure every voter can make their voice heard.”
